Latter-day Saint Young People Prepare for Missions

Thousands of young members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Papua New Guinea are learning about missionary service from others who have already volunteered for 18 months to two years in different parts of the world.

In Sunday School and other classes, Latter-day Saint youth across Papua New Guinea learn about the gospel of Jesus Christ and ways to share it with others.

Last year a group of Papua New Guinean teenagers and young adults took part in a missionary-themed youth conference in Port Moresby.

The young people experienced opening a "missionary call letter" inviting them to "serve" in a specific area of the world. All this was not real, but fun and informative for the youth nonetheless.

Returned missionaries, and young adults preparing to serve were among the counsellors and chaperones who then talked with the teenagers about what they might expect if they were to serve as missionaries in specific countries.

The teenagers were divided into groups according to their area of the world. Returned missionaries—standing at booths with memorabilia to show and stories to tell—shared experiences about being a missionary in their respective countries of service.

As the young men and women listened to experiences that others have had serving a mission, many said they felt a strong desire to learn more about Jesus Christ and some day be able to share His gospel with others as full-time missionaries.
