    US Ambassador and Missionaries Celebrate Hawaiian 4th of July

        

    By invitation of Her Excellency Catherine Ebert-Gray, United States Ambassador to Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Republic of Vanuatu, senior missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of the Papua New Guinea Port Moresby Mission participated in the annual United States of America Independence Day Reception. The event was an Independence Day celebration of the United States’ 4th of July holiday.

    The event showcased the culture of the state of Hawaii, America’s 50th state. “I thought that it was a wonderful moment for others to see the Church in a beautiful light of song and dance. I cried as I sang the Star-Spangled Banner,” commented Kathy Jo Moyers of Arizona, USA, a senior missionary in PNG.

    Local Papua New Guineans Shirley Owen Tuigamala, Charles Tuigamala and Loa Hila, former students and graduates of Brigham Young University Hawaii Campus in Laie, Oahu, Hawaii, also participated in the presentation of story, song and dance of Hawaii. “I felt I belonged with everyone. Participating with the missionaries there was a spirit of peace and love. It was a joy to dance!”, stated Loa.

    In attendance were members of the United States Embassy, representatives from the government of Papua New Guinea, civic leaders, local business men and women and leaders of various denominations. The evening provided opportunity for increasing awareness and presence of various organizations working together to strengthen intranational and international relationships.
