Marriage is Alive and Well in Papua New Guinea

Church leader travels 11 hours to help couples in remote village tie the knot

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Papua New Guinean village of Morovamu participated in 14 weddings recently.

Rigo Rome, a visiting Latter-day Saint leader, traveled six hours by car and another five hours by boat to officiate during the ceremonies.

Local leader, Eddie Bully Naia, was thrilled when 28 members of his congregation decided to marry.

The same weekend as the marriages, 33 people were baptised and became members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Each week around 100 Latter-day Saints walk or come by canoe or boat to attend worship services in the Latter-day Saint meetinghouse in Morovamu.

According to the congregation's leader, Eddie Naia, tears were shed as Rigo Rome and other visitors boarded the boat to return home.
