Church Receives Donations of Laptops in Port Moresby

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Papua New Guinea this week received 30 laptops from a generous private company in Port Moresby. Representatives of the company which prefers to remain anonymous delivered the 30 laptops to Church leaders at the Port Moresby Service Centre.

The Church’s self reliance manager Moasope McCarthy expressed his heartfelt gratitude upon receiving the laptops last week.

He remarked, “The principle of self-reliance is being taught throughout The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints here in Papua New Guinea. Members are being trained and counselled to live principles, skills and required disciplines required to become self reliant.

Last year the Port Moresby congregations received donations from the same company in the form of four pre-owned laptops.

That generous donation has gone towards the training, and assistance of many within these congregations, as well as those who are not of the LDS faith.

Youth and adults are learning basic computer skills, such as basic keyboarding, use of a mouse, use of a touch pad and even basic MS Word and Excel. Training has also been provided on how to produce CV’s and writing of applications for jobs and other educational opportunities.

More recently, the computers have been used in a program called ‘Jump Start’, that takes children who have dropped out of school to participate in special classes that teach them literacy, numeracy and effective study habits prior to returning to the school system.

The Church has a membership of approximately 26,000 in Papua New Guinea, and actively promotes education and self reliance throughout the country.
